My personal doggie journey began when I took home Sooty about 9 years ago, a two year old rescue Poodle cross. She was so sad and scared, it broke my heart to see. Her tail was firmly down and between her hind legs, so much so that I thought at the time, “will I ever see Sooty wag her tail?” She panicked when left alone, rushing all over our home frantically looking for me. Her anxiety also lead to her nipping at guests, and taking her on a walk was a real trial as she lunged at every person or dog we passed on the footpath. But I was determined to give her a loving home life, and her problems were just a challenge to me which needed to be solved. I was never going to take her back to the animal shelter, that was for sure! I read tonnes of books on dog training, watched all the YouTube clips I could find, and gradually over several years Sooty emerged from her protective shell. Now, ten years on, she is a different animal. Happy, responsive, fit and engaging, her personality is a joy. I feel a tremendous satisfaction in knowing that I probably saved her life. My only regret is that I didn’t know about Bark Buster back then as I would have saved myself hundreds of hours (and $!) reading books, and Sooty would have improved 100 times faster with a lot less stress on me! Following our success with Sooty, four years ago we took home another rescue dog, Sandy. Her puppyhood must have been a lot happier than Sooty, and apart from the normal training that all dogs benefit from, Sandy has settled in wonderfully and she and Sooty have become great friends. Her boisterous nature has even forced Sooty to “play” a bit, something that she just didn’t know how to do before.
